Mayor presents Rs. 3.49-cr. surplus budget for Bellary

BELLARY: Parvathi Indusekhar, Mayor of Bellary, on Thursday presented a Rs. 3.49-crore surplus budget for 2011-12. The budget proposals were passed unanimously without discussion.

The budget puts the expected revenue for the year at Rs. 355.07 crore, including an opening balance of Rs. 18.65 crore, and the expenditure at Rs. 351.57 crore.

Under the revenue account, the collection of property tax is estimated at Rs. 12.5 crore, rent Rs. 4.05 crore, cess charged on collection of solid waste Rs. 1.5 crore, licence fee and advertisement charges Rs. 50 lakh, fees from khata change Rs. 15 lakh, share of tax from the Regional Transport Office Rs. 10 lakh and water charges Rs. 6.75 crore. The city corporation expects to receive Rs. 14 crore from the State Finance Commission.

Of this, Rs. 8.25 crore has been set aside for roads, Rs. 1.25 crore for drains, Rs. 1 crore for repair of roads and drains, Rs. 40 lakh for construction of compound walls around some buildings, another Rs. 40 lakh for construction of commercial complexes, Rs. 50 lakh for staff quarters, Rs. 10 lakh for construction of vegetable market and Rs. 40 lakh for construction of toilets and repairs.

The Rs. 100-crore special grant would be utilised for laying new roads (Rs. 85.39 crore), development of parks (Rs. 1.25 crore), construction of drains (Rs. 2.5 crore), installation of streetlights (Rs. 4.74 crore), traffic signals (Rs. 90 lakh), purchase of vehicles for solid waste management (Rs. 4.22 crore) and construction of mutton and fish markets (Rs. 1 crore). In addition, the city corporation has set aside Rs. 3.9 crore for installation of streetlights in some residential areas, maintenance of existing streetlights and installation of power saving equipment and erection of electricity poles.

Water supply

The corporation has earmarked Rs. 6.6 crore for supply of drinking water. It proposes to spend Rs. 98 lakh from the 22.75 per cent grant (general) for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, on education and economic development.

G. Somashekara Reddy, MLA and Chairman of the Karnataka Milk Federation, was present.
