For obstructing demolition drive Jamshedpur: Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC) president P. K. Balmuchu and local MLA Banna Gupta were arrested when they along with party supporters and residents of Ramjanamnagar area here obstructed the demolition drive in the area, official sources said on Thursday. Sub-divisional Officer (SDO) Dalbhum Sunil Kumar Sinha said the district administration has identified around 400 houses constructed on encroached government land which would be demolished on the directive of the Jharkhand High Court. A large number of local residents protesting the demolition drive assembled on the spot and started pelting stones as soon as the eviction work begun this morning. Balmuchu and Gupta reached the spot and demanded that the local residents be rehabilitated first and then eviction work begin. They were arrested for obstructing the officials from discharging their duties, officials sources said. The police and the RAF lathi-charged and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the residents, who were protesting demolition of their dwelling units at Ramjanamnagar, the sources added. Gupta alleged that some persons were injured in the lathi-charge. Some local journalists, who reached the spot to cover the incident, alleged that they were roughed up by the police and the motorcycle of a photojournalist was thrown into the Kharkhai river. The SDO said the district administration had given the local residents enough time to vacate but they did not respond to the notice, leading the administration to take action.- PTI
