Many pensioners have complained that pension for January and February has not been remitted.

BANGALORE: Provident Fund (PF) pensioners have been left in the lurch in the last two months, as the computerisation drive at the Provident Fund office has stalled disbursement of pensions.

Many pensioners complain that pension for January and February has not been remitted, and enquiries in the PF office revealed that pension would be remitted through their banks in April with arrears.

“We were not informed about the non-payment of pension. When I approached the PF office, a staff informed me that I would not receive pension since computerisation is under way,” T. Sharma, a PF pensioner, told The Hindu.

While the PF office has not bothered to give publicity or inform the pensioners in advance, the staff justified it saying a notice had been put up in front of the office informing people about the delay.

“Many might be dependent on PF pension. What happens to them if pension is stopped without prior intimation,” Mr. Sharma questioned.

According to a trade union representative on the Karnataka Regional Committee of Provident Fund, the PF office has been facing staff shortage, affecting work.

Staff strength is not based on workload, resulting in some offices having excess staff, while others are facing shortage. There are 1.4 lakh PF pensioners in the State of which 92,000 are in Bangalore.

Acknowledging that pensions have not been disbursed, an official in the Provident Fund office hinted that the pensioners may have to wait till the process is streamlined. “We are computerising pension payment orders (PPO), which are likely to be completed soon. Pensioners will get the arrears too,” the official said and added that the banks had been intimated about the delay.

The official at the Bangalore regional office on Richmond Road said that 48,000 PPOs out of the 62,000 PPOs have been computerised so far, and we have deployed staff on two shifts to complete the process early.

“Pensioners have to wait till the process is streamlined. The number of pensioners is also increasing every month,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Member of Regional Committee of PF M.D. Hari Govind said that they have been told by the PF officials that the computerisation would be completed soon. “We have also asked that the task be completed quickly,” he said.
