KRISHNAGIRI: Poll campaign gained momentum after the final list of the candidates was announced in many constituencies in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts during the past two days. Major parties from the two fronts led by the AIADMK and DMK intensified their campaign in rural and urban areas. General public heaved a sigh of relief due to the strict monitoring mechanism introduced by the Election Commission of India to control distribution of money, printing of leaflets, posters, banners etc. The vehicles of the political leaders were plying on the streets and main thoroughfares of the district without party flags. Party flags were removed and flag posts were painted in white, while symbols were covered with gunny bags. Even the statues of the leaders of the political parties were covered by the authorities. Due to the restrictions on several fronts, political parties were undertaking campaigns in a low-key style. Except the AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa and Vijayakanth, leader of the DMDK, the frontline leaders of other political parties, including the ruling DMK, have skipped these two districts during campaigning. Ms. Jayalalithaa will be campaigning in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts on April 9 in three to four places after Salem. After finishing her campaign in Hosur, it was said that she will fly back to Chennai via Bangalore. Mr. Vijayakanth undertook a two-day campaign on Monday and Tuesday in several places in the two districts. G. Ramakrishnan, State Secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist), addressed a public meeting at Denkanikottai on Monday. D. Pandiyan, State Secretary, Communist Party of India, undertook an intensive campaign at Pennagaram constituency on Friday supporting the party candidate N. Nanjappan, who is engaged in a bitter battle with P.N.P. Inbasekaran, DMK candidate. Thol Thirumavalavan, leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, campaigned in Uthangarai, Veppanahalli and Harur for the past two days. P. Dillibabu, CPI (M) candidate for Harur constituency in Dharmapuri district, is campaigning in every nook and corner of the constituency garnering support.
