No commitment to revive toddy tapping

Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement (TNTM) has slammed the DMK and the AIADMK alliances as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party for not making any commitment to revive toddy tapping in their respective manifestoes.
“It is sad that despite our struggle for the last five years for the revival of toddy tapping along with the projection of scientific proof for toddy as a nutritious drink, no major party has shown interest to incorporate the issue in the pre-poll promises lists,” TNTM field coordinator C. Nallasamy told The Hindu.
He reiterated that toddy was never considered an intoxicating liquid, a factor which was even observed by the Supreme Court once.
Moreover, Mahatma Gandhi in his speech delivered on October 30, 1937, had termed toddy as a “healthy drink”, he pointed out.
“If the State Government can allow unlimited sale of Indian Made Foreign Liquor in State why cannot they allow toddy, which contains only 4.5 per cent alcohol against 42.8 per cent alcohol present in the IMFL, and moreover, toddy has nutritious value,” Mr. Nallasamy said.
Mr. Nallasamy said that the Movement activists had decided to exercise their franchise in the coming elections only for the candidates who come out in open with their support for toddy tapping.
“If no candidate is willing to commit in a given constituency, we will exercise the ‘49 O' option,” he said.
Freebies
The Movement had also been critical of freebies promised by both DMK and AIADMK alliances as well as BJP in the manifestoes.
“The offers of free tangible items are not done with good intention but only as a step to get commission from the manufacturers of the respective goods,” he alleged.
Mr. Nallasamy was of the opinion that if the political parties were so concerned of the people, they should have come out with better social security schemes for aged people.
