Police have stepped up drive to check ‘For registration' vehicles, writes L. Srikrishna
Thorough:Traffic police checking ‘For registration' vehicles at Goripalayam. With Assembly elections fast approaching, it gives an impression that the custodians of law are tightening all loose ends in Madurai. The officials do not want to take a chance on anything as more than the observers appointed by the Election Commission of India to monitor the poll process, deployment of central forces and “third eye” (videographers) is in large numbers. “Any fault or negligence on our part may reflect badly on our service records. Hence, irrespective of who wins or loses, we have to discharge our duties,” is the general view expressed by officials. For their part, the city traffic police are keeping erring motorists on tenterhooks. The drive to detain vehicles without registration numbers or vehicles plying with “For Registration” stickers is continuing in the city. It is an offence to drive a vehicle without a registration number as per the law. Under normal circumstances, the authorities may not have bothered to book erring violators. But with allegations coming in thick and fast that cash meant for voters is being transported in such numberless vehicles, the police are relentless in their drive, a traffic police personnel in the city said. In just less than three hours on the evening of Thursday, police and officials from the Regional Transport Office impounded 11 vehicles (five four-wheelers, as many two-wheelers and a tractor) and issued “seizure” certificate. The vehicles, all brand new ones, are under police custody at the Armed Reserve Police Ground, an officer said. According to Motor Vehicles Act, the vehicles should display the registration particulars after obtaining them from the RTO office concerned on production of the vehicle. Without the numbers, driving a vehicle is illegal and punishable, they said and added that many motorists who produced valid documents stating that the vehicle had been temporarily registered were released on the spot. The checks were conducted at Goripalayam, East Gate, South Gate and Kalavasal. Vehicles bearing other district registration numbers plying in the city are also being monitored by special teams. As per law, they would be directed to leave the city within 48 hours prior to the polling date, a senior police officer said.
