Demand for improvement of Tehri constituency

Congress secretary speaks to Chief Minister over issue; party supports MLA

DEHRA DUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has invited fasting Congress MLA from Tehri Kishore Upadhyay for talks here on April 4.

The invitation came after State Congress president Yashpal Arya had a telephonic conversation with Mr. Nishank from the ‘satyagraha' venue at Chamba near Tehri on Friday.

Mr. Arya had accompanied All India Congress Committee secretary Bhanwar Jitendra Singh to Chamba to call on Mr. Upadhyay on the 11 {+t} {+h} day of his indefinite fast seeking development of Tehri constituency. Mr. Bhanwar was sent to Chamba by AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, sources said.

Mr. Bhanwar told reporters that the fast by Mr. Upadhyay was a crusade by people and the Congress party stood by the genuine development demands of the masses.

Meanwhile, Mr. Upadhyay refused to end his fast till positive results came out of Monday's talks. “I will however add a spoon of honey to my diet of half a lemon and water twice a day,” Mr. Upadhyay said, adding that he was confident that something positive would emerge after the talks.

All the five Congress MPs, Leader of the Opposition Harak Singh Rawat and a small delegation from Tehri will be part of the talks with the Chief Minister, sources said.

Earlier, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Harish Rawat had called upon Mr. Upadhyay on Thursday. He later met Mr. Nishank and sought an early end to the impasse.
