Undeclared Emergency in TN, says Karunanidhi
S. Ramesh
ERODE: In a veiled reference to the curbs imposed on electioneering by the Election Commission of India, DMK president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi alleged here on Thursday that an undeclared Emergency was prevailing in Tamil Nadu now.
Addressing a public meeting, he said the situation now was aimed at intimidating the DMK alliance and to break it. “The DMK had already faced an Emergency and none could intimidate us. This alliance cannot be broken,” the DMK chief said.
When Emergency was imposed during Indira Gandhi's regime, the lower level officials had misused power without her knowledge.
In fact, Indira Gandhi, while attending a public meeting in Tamil Nadu later, had apologised for the high-handedness that took place during the Emergency.
Similarly, without the knowledge of the top Election Commission authorities, officials in the State were resorting to intimidation and threat, the Chief Minister alleged.
Power shortage
Touching upon power shortage, the DMK leader said his Government had brought in over Rs. 50,000 crore worth of industrial investment during the last five years.
This had led to establishment of more industries and increase in the demand for electricity, which ultimately resulted in a power shortage.
“We have initiated a number of power projects in the State and within three to four years, the State will have adequate power to supply,” he said. The DMK chief pointed out that the opposition camp was yet to firmly name its Chief Minister candidate.
Appeal to people
He asked the people to support the alliance that was firm in its objectives. Former Union Minister and Congress leader E.V.K.S Elangovan, DMK leader N.K.K Periyasamy and senior leaders from various parties in the Democratic Progressive Alliance attended the meeting.
