NALGONDA: District Collector S.A.M. Rizvi surprised the agitating leaders of dalit organisations by squatting along with them at a meeting in the Collectorate on Saturday to discuss the modalities for celebrating the birth anniversaries of Babu Jagjivan Ram on April 5 and B.R. Ambedkar on April 14. He shared the floor with the leaders for about 15 minutes following which normalcy was restored in the committee hall. Later the leaders and officials held normal discussions. The trouble arose when the dalit leaders, who were invited for the meeting by the Collector, got agitated and felt ‘insulted' when they found that he was absent in the committee hall. Mr. Rizvi was sitting in his chambers. The leaders decided to boycott the meeting and staged a dharna in front of the main gate to register their protest. With intent to ease the tension and placate the leaders, Mr. Rizvi moved to the committee hall. On seeing him, the leaders continued their protest by squatting. Taking them by surprise, the Collector also sat and held brief discussions with them, which culminated in a solution. The row was settled to the relief of everyone. Both officials and dalit leaders resolved to celebrate the birth anniversaries suitably with the involvement of the administration.
