Kiran's sops to Chittoor mind-boggling: Muddu

TDLP leader doubts if the government can spare such huge amounts needed for the schemes

TIRUPATI: Deputy leader of the Telugu Desam Legislature Party G. Muddukrishnama Naidu has described as ‘mind-boggling' the huge package of sops worth Rs. 6,500 crore which the Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has announced for Chittoor district during his visit on Friday.

Financial mess

Talking to mediapersons at the Press Club here, he expressed his scepticism over the government, mired as it is in a financial mess due to revenue leakages and corruption, being able to spare such huge funds for his ‘utopian schemes' He also sought to point out that there was no need either to spend a whopping Rs. 4,500 crore on drinking water schemes and another Rs.1,000 crore for integration and modernisation of irrigation tanks, if only the government made a dispassionate use of the schemes and proposals the TDP had finalised for the district during Chandrababu Naidu's stint.

He cited in this connection the schemes such as the government-Srinivasa Trust combined project to meet drinking water needs of western mandals of the district, the Rs.1,000 crore minor irrigation tanks integration scheme.

He said the Telugu Ganga canal already available between Kandaleru-Srikalahasti could be put to optimum use and a huge summer storage tank can be built somewhere near Srikalahasti from where water could be sent to Chittoor and other parts of the district through lift irrigation at a lesser budget outlay. He also wanted the government to explore the possibility of taking water from Krishnapuram project near Karvetnagar to Chittoor to meet its drinking water crisis which would be less expensive than the present proposal.

While welcoming the good intentions behind Mr. Reddy announcing huge sops to his native Chittoor district on the occasion of its centenary celebrations, the TDP leader wanted him to convene a meeting with the officials and non-officials of the district to discuss afresh the requirements of the district, work out their technical and financial viabilities and implement wherever possible the schemes already prepared taking an objective view without political prejudices.

On YSR Congress

On the YSR Congress party, whose Tirupati office was inaugurated on Saturday with a lot of fanfare, the TDP leader said that all the ‘big names' of the YSR regime and YSR's family who were allegedly behind all the multi-crore scams that broke out during his seven-year misrule were there in the new outfit floated by Jaganmohan Reddy and cited in this connection the names of Y.V. Subba Reddy, Ravinder Reddy, Ambati Rambabu.
