dated April 4, 1961: Galbraith's pledge

Professor John Kenneth Galbraith, who was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to India in Washington on April 3, pledged that he would devote every effort to strengthening the ties between the world's two largest democracies. The Harvard economist said his New Delhi post was a public appointment that he had dreamed of more than anything else. Mr. M.C. Chagla, the Indian Ambassador, said in a speech at the State Department ceremony, “You have the right outlook and spirit. As an economist and an intellectual you will be most welcome in my country.” Mr. Dean Rusk, the Secretary of State, said the U. S. was sending to India one of its most distinguished economists, a man who was inclined to see things as they were.
