PUCL's appeal to CEO

Special Correspondent

Protect Madurai Collector from political interference

MADURAI: The People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has appealed to the Chief Electoral Officer to protect the Madurai Collector, U. Sagayam, from any political interference.

In a letter sent to the CEO, the PUCL pointed out that the Collector had initiated several steps to prevent use of money power in election and was also trying to create an awareness among voters, especially the youth, of electoral integrity. But the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies were charging Mr. Sagayam of being partial.

The State vice-president of PUCL, R. Murali, said in a statement that the complaints against the Collector were vindictive in nature. The initiative of Mr. Sagayam, the statement said, had given an impetus to all middle class voters to participate in the campaign to safeguard electoral integrity.

The PUCL viewed any threat to the Collector, “who is neutral,” as an “anti-democratic act” and appealed to the voters to be firm in rejecting any price for their votes.
