KOCHI: The Communist Party of India, Marxist (CPI-M) should clarify its ties with the Jamaat-e-Islami, Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has said. Addressing a news conference here on Sunday, Mr. Chenithala said the CPI(M) was playing the communal card. Referring to the resignation of Hameed Vanimel as political secretary of the Jamaat, in protest against the organisation's offer to back the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the Assembly elections, Mr. Chennithala said the CPI(M) had flayed their (Jamaat's) ideology in the past. CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan had, a fortnight ago, met Jamaat leaders in Alappuzha following which the Jamaat had decided to back the LDF. “This is plain opportunistic politics,” Mr. Chennithala said. The government had earlier raided the Jamaat's office in Kozhikode and action initiated against its activists, he said. The move to prosecute Congress leader K. Sudhakaran for his comments on the judiciary was ‘sheer political vendetta,' he said. The remark by the Chief Minister that the Indian Union Muslim League would get the Deputy Chief Minister's post, if the UDF came to power, was baseless, he said. “Neither has the party demanded the post nor has the UDF discussed it,” he said. Special Correspondent adds from Thiruvananthapuram: BJP State president V. Muraleedharan said here on Monday that the talks held by the CPI(M) and the Jamaat-e-Islami showed the hollowness of the stand of the CPI(M) against terrorism.
