Trinamool worker killed during campaigning

Staff Reporter

KOLKATA: A Trinamool Congress supporter was killed during a political clash that occurred in the midst of the door-to-door campaign of the party's nominee from Jamuria constituency in West Bengal's Bardhaman district on Monday.

Rabin Kazi (44) was run over by a car in the middle of an altercation and was seriously injured. He was rushed to a hospital in Asansol, but died on the way, Humayun Kabir, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu over telephone.

“The Trinamool Congress candidate from Jamuria constituency, Prabhat Chatterjee, was campaigning in Barul village when he was obstructed by a group led by a person named Dinabandhu Barui about 2 p.m.,” he said.

Mr. Barui reportedly said residents of the village supported the Left and objected to the Trinamool supporters entering the homes of the villagers, Mr. Kabir added.

Altercation

As a result there was an altercation that involved a large number of people from both sides. Both Mr. Chatterjee and Mr. Barui tried to flee the area, but while Mr. Chatterjee escaped, Rabin Kazi tried to prevent Mr. Barui from doing so. He was run over by the car in which Mr. Barui escaped, he added.

Mr. Kabir said four persons were detained in connection with the incident, but Mr. Barui remained absconding. A close watch was being maintained in all roads in the district as well as neighbouring Birbhum district, he said.

Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee is expected to visit Jamuria on Tuesday to participate in a rally to protest against the incident.
