PUDUCHERRY: Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi has hailed the Union Territory as a model worth emulating. “Puducherry is a role model for peace, a model in the education and health spheres. Women here enjoy a unique status, the poor, the aged and weaker sections get the benefits of social security,” she said, addressing an election meeting at the Upplam ground on Tuesday.

Complimenting the Congress government on initiating several schemes targeting all sections of society, she said it goes to the credit of the government for providing free education to students at Rajiv Gandhi Medical College and Institute here.

A vote for the Congress-led combine would ensure continuity in implementation of development schemes and sustaining the excellence that has been achieved in education and healthcare, she said, adding that the manifesto released by the Congress would be the agenda for governance.

“No other party has been able to provide a detailed manifesto, which is our agenda for governance in all the four regions,” she said. The Congress led combine is the only front committed to the overall development of the Union Territory and all sections of society.

She also introduced the candidates put up by Congress, the DMK, the PMK and the VCK at the public meeting.

Others who attended the meeting included Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is in-charge for the party affairs in Puducherry, Union Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office and Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanasamy, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) P. Kannan, PCC chief A. V Subramanian, convenor of Puducherry unit of DMK R.V. Janakiraman and leaders of alliance parties.
