6,000 people served food at Vedic ritual 600 coconuts, 200 litres of milk used daily THRISSUR: Elaborate ceremonies were performed at Athirathram, a 5,000-year old Vedic ritual and yaga, at Panjal on Tuesday. The rites performed included ‘Vatsapra Upasthaanam' (adoration of the Ukha fire), ‘Sani graham' (collection of money for the yagna), ‘Pravargya Sambhaaram' (formal collection of the items required for Pravargyam). The day ended with Vratha Doham (milking the cow and boiling the milk to the accompaniment of mantra chanting) and ‘Vratha Paanam' (consumption of boiled milk). As many as 6,000 people partook of food served at Athirathram. The main chef in the kitchen at Athirathram is Vishwam from the Kodunthrupulli village in Palakad district. About 600 coconuts, 150 kg of lentils and 200 litres of milk are being used in the kitchen everyday. Visitors to the event included film director Lal Jose and musician Finian McKean (Finn Moore Gerety).
