IMPRESSIVE show:A demonstration of ships as part of the National Maritime Day celebration in Tuticorin on Tuesday. Tuticorin: V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, has celebrated the 48th National Maritime Day on its premises here on Tuesday. A. Subbiah, Chairman of the Port, placed wreaths at the Memorial of Sailors, who sacrificed their lives at sea, at Zone B in the presence of officials from the Marine Department and other employees and workers of the port. After the laying of the wreaths, the port authorities observed a two-minute silence on the occasion. In commemoration of the maiden ship — SS Loyalty — from India to London in 1919, the National Maritime Day is being celebrated every year on April 5. Mr. Subbiah took the salute from the sailors, as part of the programme. During the schedule, Ilasai Manian, secretary, Ragunathan Educational Trust, Ettayapuram, was honoured with a certificate and cash award by the port authorities in recognition of his voluntary service in establishing a temporary museum with the exhibits of freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram in Tuticorin when G.K. Vasan, Union Shipping Minister arrived in for renaming of the Tuticorin Port. Later, a series of programmes, including tug of war, musical chair, pot breaking and other entertainment programmes were organised. In the evening, Geetu Joshi, Director (PD), Ministry of Shipping, presented prizes to the winners of various competitions.
