‘We will review our nuclear facilities'

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: In the aftermath of the nuclear crisis in tsunami-struck Japan, the international community will be putting our heads together — just as we did after Chernobyl — to learn from each other and increase safety of nuclear plants, the former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, M.R. Srinivasan, said on Tuesday. “We will review our nuclear projects… We were planning to start fuel loading next month in Kudankulam (Tamil Nadu), but we will first go through a review in the light of Fukushima,” said Dr. Srinivasan delivering a lecture on ‘The recent nuclear disaster in Japan and lessons for India' at the Bangalore International Centre.

Dr. Srinivasan fielded a volley of questions from scientists and the public on the safety and feasibility of India's nuclear programme.

While the Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Maharashtra withstood the unprecedentedrainfall in Mumbai in 2005, the Kalpakkam plant in Tamil Nadu saw no casualties during the Indonesia tsunami of 2006, he said. Nuclear plants in Kudankulam and Kalpakkam will get additional protection, he added.
