This Day That Age
The issue of the Pakistan Government's protest against the construction of the Farraka Barrage across the Ganges to save the Calcutta port from silting up came up before the Lok Sabha on April 6. Besides the protest, a personal letter has been received by Prime Minister Nehru from President Ayub Khan, on this matter and a reply will be sent on the Prime Minister's return to New Delhi. The utilisation of the eastern rivers was discussed in London by Mr. Nehru and President Ayub Khan and both had agreed that it would be advantageous to both countries to co-operate in connection with the Farraka barrage scheme as well as other schemes connected with the Teesta river. In fact, the matter of convening a conference at Ministerial and official levels has been under active consideration, but Pakistan chose to send a protest note. Authoritative quarters in New Delhi emphasise the fact that India would do nothing that would hurt the interest of Pakistan.
