dated April 7, 1961: Gandhi memorial at Dandi

Prime Minister Nehru declared open the Dandi Memorial in Dandi on April 6. The simple memorial, consisting of a gate, a raised platform and three plaques, has been built round the huge banyan tree from where, exactly 31 years ago, Mahatma Gandhi gave the stirring call to the nation to join in the great liberation struggle. Mr. Nehru, declaring open the memorial, appealed to the nation to learn from the life of Mahatma Gandhi. His life, Mr. Nehru said, was a message in itself. This memorial was a unique one. It was a message of struggle as well as of peace. It was a memorial symbolising the novel method of struggle which Gandhiji had shown to the world.
