Election Special :AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa addressing voters at Karaikudi in Sivaganga District on Tuesday

SIVAGANGA: AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa, on Tuesday promised that Hindus would get assistance to go on pilgrimage to Nepal and Mansarovar if the AIADMK was voted to power.

Addressing an election meeting at Karaikudi in Sivaganga district, she said she had promised that the government would extend support to Muslims going on Haj pilgrimage and to Christians for their pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Similar support would be extended to the Hindus for taking ‘holy yatra' to Saligram in Nepal and Mansarovar in China.

Coming down heavily on the DMK government, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the people had been fed up with the government's failure to control price rise, sand mafia, ration rice smuggling, illegal lottery, kangaroo courts (katta panchayat) and atrocities of local anti-social elements.

The people had been bestowed with a wonderful opportunity to vote out the DMK. The party workers should work tirelessly to defeat the DMK-led alliance.

2G scam

Besides highlighting the 2G spectrum scam in which she alleged that several crores of rupees had been swindled by a family, she said corruption had reached an all-time high during the DMK rule. Common people were affected by rampant corruption. Hence, the DMK had to be taught a lesson, she said.

The State, which was progressing at a fast rate during her rule, saw the growth rate coming down in the last five years due to mismanagement, self interest and poor policies.

Cable network

If the AIADMK was voted to power, she would nationalise the cable network to offer cable connection at a cheaper rate to viewers.

She also promised the voters that the lands grabbed by the DMK elements would be retrieved and the same would be handed over to the original owners.

Ms. Jayalalithaa canvassed for AIADMK candidates for Karaikudi and Thirupattur constituencies Cholan Palanisamy and R.S. Rajakannappan respectively and the Communist Party of India candidate for Sivaganga S. Gunasekaran.
