Hindu Aikya Vedi plans stir

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Hindu Aikya Vedi has accused the government of diverting Rs.1.6 crore from the amount sanctioned for purchase of security equipment for the Sabarimala temple.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, general secretary Kummanam Rajasekharan said the amount was diverted for the purchase of 25 upmarket cars for senior police officers. He said the diversion of funds would affect crowd control and security arrangements at the temple.

Mr.Rajasekharan said the Home Department had prevailed upon the Finance Minister to release Rs.1.6 crore from the Rs.4.6-crore package in the supplementary grant approved by the Assembly for stepping up security measures at Sabarimala. However, the purchase of security equipment did not take place and the balance amount was allowed to lapse.

He said the diversion of funds highlighted the government's callous attitude to the plight of the pilgrims visiting the temple. Mr.Rajasekharan warned that the Vedi would launch a stir against the indifferent attitude to the temple that contributed a major share of the government's revenue.
