CHENNAI: As many as 21 students of Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children, at a function here on Friday, celebrated the successful completion of early intervention programme. While 11 of them have joined mainstream schools, 10 will pursue education in special schools. As the little children dressed in flowing green and yellow graduation robes rose up to collect their certificates, Priya Rajakumar, principal of the centre, said the moment was memorable for not only them but also the parents, special therapists and special educators who had “built the necessary bridges” wherever required. “The emphasis, besides academic requirements, has been on socialisation and communication needs, so the transition to mainstream education environment is smooth,” she added. Stressing the fact that total parental involvement is important in early intervention programmes for children aged less than six, A.Sarojini, special educator at the centre, said early intervention centres help identify the development delay and the specific disability in the child by engaging him/her in various activities. Uma Sridhar, a parent of a special child and a project coordinator at the Centre, agreed. “While we make sure our children get everything they need, it is also important we don't lose ourselves,” she said, suggesting that parents of children with disability explore their potential by getting into special education. Madhuram Narayanan Centre director Jaya Krishnaswamy and associate director Vimala Kannan participated.
