Achievers:Gopalakrishna Pai, K. Puttaswamy, H.S. Raghavendra Rao
BANGALORE: The Karnataka Sahitya Academy has announced awards for the year 2010 to five writers — S.M. Vrishabhendraswami, H.S. Raghavendra Rao, Srikanta Kudige, S. Usha and Kotaganahalli Ramaiah — for their lifetime contribution to Kannada literature. Similarly 18 writers have been selected for the 2009 book awards. While the five litterateurs will be presented a cash prize of Rs.10,000 and citation, the book awardees will receive Rs. 5,000 along with a citation . Chairman of the academy M.H. Krishnaiah told presspersons here on Friday that S.M. Vrishabendraswamy had made significant contribution in the field of literature. Mr. H.S. Raghavendra Rao, who had edited “Shatamanada Sahitya Vimarshe” brought out by academy and published more than 20 important literary works, was highly regarded for his contribution to the field of literary criticism, he added. Mr. Srikanta Kudige had published more than 30 works in various forms of literature. His important works are “Pashchaatya Mahakavyagalu”, “Bandaya Sahitya Chaluvali” and “Kuvempu Sahitya”. Prof S. Usha's works including “Togalu Bombeya Atma Kathe”, “Ee Nelada Haadu” and “Kasuti” (novel) have received appreciation from both critics and readers. Mr. Kotaganahalli Ramaiah's, who was involved in Dalit movement and writing since 1975 had made rich contribution by instituting “Adima” – to herald and foster the inclusive politics beyond the social categories of caste, religion, gender and class. His works including “Sindh Madiga Sanskruti” (1993) and “Talaparige” have received critical appreciation, Prof. Krishnaiah noted. Book awardees of 2009 are as follows: H.L. Pushpa (Poetry — Lohada Kannu), Gopalakrishna Pai (Novel — Swapna Saraswata), Nataraj Huliyar (Short story — Basavalingappanavaru Mattu David Sahebaru), D.A. Shankar (Play — Tipu Sultan), A.R. Manikanth (Essay — Amma Helida Yentu Sullugalu), Satish Chapparike (Travelogue — Thames Tatada Tavaka Tallana), Aravinda Chokkadi (Autobiography — Illada Teeradalli Appana Badukinondige Samvada), B.N. Sumithrabai (Literary criticism — Sarahaddugala Aache-Eeche), G. Jnanananda (Editing — Niranjana Kavi Virachita Kanchi Purana), Masti Krishnappa (Children literature — Kannada Kandana Dindima Naada), B.S. Shylaja (Science literature — Aagasada Alemarigalu), Muzaffar Assadi (Humanities — Karnatakadalli Identity Rajakiya-Raitha, Raitha Horata Haagu Samajika Chaluvali), Mohan Kuntar (Research — Yakshagana Aaharya), R.P. Hegde (Translation-creative — Aavige), Vishwa Kundapura (Translation-non-creative — Vimochaneya Samaradalli), K. Puttaswamy (Cinema Yaana), Sujatha Jangamashetty (debut work — Choukattina Chitragalu) and Krishnamurthy Chandar (English translation of Keerthinatha Kurtakoti's ‘Uriya Nalige' as ‘The Flaming Tongue').
