Tirupur: The election in Udumalpet constituency will be keenly looked into as it is one of the two constituencies in the district where Kongunadu Munnetra Kazhagam (KMK) is locking horns with AIADMK. The AIADMK candidate and former Minister Pollachi V. Jayaraman is a veteran of many electoral battles. But this is the first time that he would be trying its luck from Udumalpet constituency as his previous two successful entries into the state legislature was from Pollachi constituency. He moved into the constituency, as the incumbent MLA C. Shanmugavelu (AIADMK) had been shifted to Madathukulam, a newly-created constituency in the delimitation exercise. Being a first-timer, D. Ilamparithi of KMK have tough times ahead in the heat of the electoral battlefield. Heavy task He will have to try convincing the voters that his relatively new outfit could provide a viable alternative to the AIADMK. The poll promises of him included hydroelectric power projects along the Western Ghats, a medical college and schemes to impound rain water for irrigational purposes, among others. Sericulture Some of the basic problems faced by the residents like inadequate supply of drinking water, poor roads and mosquito menace have been remaining unaddressed for many decades even though there were no dearth of promises for improvement of basic amenities from candidates every time. Another major problem that the candidates this time will have to confront is the grievances of farmers involved in sericulture activities. Sericulturists are presently reeling under severe operational stress caused by the decrease in the import duty on silk yarn and lack of rate stabilization for silk cocoons. “The recent slashing down of import duty on silk yarn by 25 per cent resulted in silk yarn flowing into the country from China in large quantities. This brought down the rates of cocoon produced domestically,” complained M. S. Vasudevaramkumar, president of Tamil Nadu Sericulture Farmers Association. Sericulture farmers also wanted the government to come up with minimum support price for silk cocoons. Electoral history The electoral history of the constituency speaks about many intense direct contests between DMK and AIADMK candidates since 1980. The first person to get elected from the constituency was Mounaguruswami Naidu of Congress in 1951 when he beat Thangavelu of CPI by a margin of 9,292 votes. The constituency also had sent an Independent candidate to the Assembly in 1957 when S.T. Subaiah Gounder defeated the then incumbent Mounaguruswami Naidu. In all, AIADMK candidates had been elected five times out of the 13 elections held here. The DMK candidates had won four times, Congress on three occasions and an Independent candidate once.
