Sania advances; Devvarman loses
CHARLESTON: Sania Mirza entered the quarterfinals of the Family Circle Cup with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Germany's Sabine Lisicki, here on Thursday.
She will now meet China's Peng Shuai who ousted seventh-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
At Houston, Somdev Devvarman failed to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. men's clay court championship, losing to third-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 4-6, 1-6.
Having had a good run in the hard court events at Indian Wells and Miami, Devvarman registered a first round win over Robert Kendrick of USA, but Garcia-Lopez proved too strong for him.
The third-seeded and World No. 26 Garcia-Lopez, who got a bye in his first round overcame five double-faults before getting the better of the Indian in one hour and 27 minutes and book a last-eight berth. — PTI
