MYSORE: Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) is gearing up to open doors to members of Self Help Groups to educate and sensitise them about the steps required to empower themselves and making the most of the benefits extended by the government, banks and other agencies. With the Government laying emphasis on empowering Sthree Shakti groups and other SHGs, who have been lauded for the efforts to come to the mainstream through various activities, the university is designing two courses for the groups to introduce them to the concept of microfinancing. Launch next year KSOU Vice-chancellor K.S. Rangappa told The Hindu that the two courses, of three-months and six-months duration, would be launched next year. A coordinator had been appointed to prepare the syllabus. “We need time to prepare the curriculum. Experts in microfinancing will be consulted before the courses are announced,” he disclosed. Prof. Rangappa said there are plans to invite members of the SHGs for about five to six days to the university campus. Resource persons from the government, institutions, banks and others will be invited to hold classroom sessions for them. KSOU Dean (Academic) Jagadeesha said there are about 14 crore SHGs in the country and a good number are in the State. The certificate programmes for them would be launched in 2012-13, he added.
