Protect city's identity, says the Minister

Intelligent Transport System to be introduced in Mysore with World Bank aid

MYSORE: Minister for Home and Transport R. Ashok feels Mysore city, which is known for its serenity, should not go the Bangalore way. He appealed to residents of the city to use public transport more to reduce traffic congestion and protect the city's identity.

Speaking after inaugurating the Inter-Modal Transit Centre (IMTC) built under the JNNURM at Kuvempunagar as part of the Bus Day here, the Minister said that people of Mysore were protective about their city and expressed confidence that they would not allow it to become another Bangalore. “They (citizens) can prevent pollution from reaching alarming levels here by switching over to mass transport systems,” he said.

Announcing the public transport facilities introduced in Mysore would be taken as the model by the Transport Department for other cities in the State, he said work on five bus terminuses out of seven taken up under JNNURM had been completed and the rest two would be completed soon.

The Minister said Real Time Passenger Information System or Intelligent Transport System would be introduced in Mysore under the World Bank aid. Tenders had been invited and project work would commence soon, he added.

Mr. Ashok disclosed that the Centre had appreciated the achievements made by the KSRTC in improving the public transport and advised other States to replicate them for better urban transport. Praising the achievements of the State transport corporation, Mr. Ashok said the KSRTC had won 30 awards in recognition of its efforts to improve the public transport system. “The KSRTC has bagged another award, which will be presented in Dubai on April 13. A team will be going to Dubai to receive the award,” he said.

On the occasion, the Minister launched the Bus Day to popularise and promote public transport in Mysore.

Minister in-charge of Mysore district S.A. Ramdas; Mayor Sandesh Swamy; Karnataka Housing Board chairman G.T. Deve Gowda; senior officials of the Transport Department and others were present.

The IMTC facility at Kuvempunagar has been built at a cost of Rs. 18.36 crore on 6.2-acre land adjacent to the bus depot. It has a large parking facility and can accommodate 80 cars and 800 two-wheelers.
