Mangalore
PRECARIOUSLY PERCHED:A portion of the site from the earth has been removed posting a threat to Beary Public School in Mangalore. MANGALORE: A private school in the city has lodged a complaint with the police stating that a builder has been excavating mud from the hill on which the school is located, thereby posing a danger to the children. Administrator of Bearys Public School Geetha Rego said that Ganesh Bangera, who was building an apartment adjoining the school land, had been excavating mud from the hill on which the school was located. The school building was now perched precariously on the edge of the hillock for the last one week. The base of the school building is just 25 feet higher than the base of the apartment. She said that during the last week, the edge of the hill had receded by around 10 feet because of the activities of the builder. “We have told him repeatedly that removing the mud would threaten the school building. We have organised a camp in school next week. What if it rains before then?” she said. Even a single shower could cause a mudslide which could lead the building to develop cracks, she said. “He could have built a retaining wall without cutting away the hillside,” she said. The school has built a railing to protect children from falling off the hill. The school, which is located in the Hathills area of the city, has an underground water tank, which is also threatened by the removal of mud, Ms. Rego said. Mr. Bangera said that they were only excavating from their land, and had not encroached on the land of the school. “It is necessary to remove so much mud to build a strong retaining wall. The school building will not be damaged,” he said.
