Bahujan Samaj Party Supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati addressing a public meeting at Teppakulam in Madurai on Saturday. MADURAI: Bahujan Samaj Party is the only party in the country which carries forward the dreams and legacy of Bhim Rao Ambedkar who had a greater vision of social transformation in general and Dalit emancipation in particular, said the Bahujan Samaj Party supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati. Addressing an election meeting at Teppakulam here on Saturday, the UP Chief Minister said that it was time to teach a lesson to the DMK, the AIADMK and the Congress, by making the BSP an inevitable political force in the State. She asked the people to vote for the BSP to have self-rule with self respect. In UP, BSP, fighting against all odds, had emerged victorious four times. “Keep that as an inspiration and work hard,” she appealed. Even after 63 years of Independence, both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, which ruled at the Centre, had done nothing to emancipate Dalits and other sections of the oppressed. But, in Uttar Pradesh, BSP had done so much towards the socio-economic empowerment of the weaker sections of society, which included poor among the upper castes. She also accused both the BJP and Congress of trying to do away with the concept of reservation which was Dr. Ambedkar's greatest effort to break the systematic oppression that was prevalent in our society. BSP, in UP, had been delivering better political justice by framing policies in a meticulous way that provided special assistance to Muslims, Dalits and other weaker sections. Ambedkar Villages in the rural areas exemplified the attempts of the State to foster harmonious relationship, said Ms. Mayawati. She also said that BSP had given reservation to the poor among the upper castes in UP and this could as well be replicated in Tamil Nadu. Understanding history was vital for the oppressed castes and to instil a sense of historical consciousness among the masses, UP government had erected statues of Mahatma Jothirao Phule, Dr. Ambedkar, Shaju Maharaj, Thanthai EVR Periyar and Narayana Guru in the major towns of the State, she said. Ms. Mayawati said that the party banked on the support of poor and lower middle class voters from all castes and government employees, who were expecting a change. Suresh Mane, national general secretary, K. Armstrong, State president and Kolathur candidate, and K. Murugavel Rajan, Manamadurai candidate, also spoke on the occasion. Mr. Mane said that the party believed that it could spring a surprise in Kolathur and Manamadurai. All the 197 contestants were present at the venue.
