MANGALORE: Two schoolchildren from Mangalore, who have won awards at the national level for their paintings at a stamp design competition, were felicitated on Sunday by the Dakshina Kannada Philately and Numismatics Association (DKPNA). Vaibhav Shenoy, class 8, Canara High School, and Shriraksha, also of class 8, Canara English High School, won the awards. Their paintings will be published as stamps on Children's Day, said association vice-president Baikady Srinivas Rao. The competition was organised by INDIPEX in New Delhi and was held in Balmatta Post Office in Mangalore. Since the theme given to the students was “tigers”, Sriraksha said she had painted a tiger standing on some rocks. Vaibhav said he had painted a tiger in the forests. Roopshree, a student of medicine and a life member of the association, was felicitated at the same meet by the association for getting five gold medals in her medical examinations from the Bangalore-based Rajiv Gandhi University for Health Sciences (RGUHS). She said she used to collect stamps before she joined medical college. Other senior members of the association, including M.K. Krishnayya, encouraged her to resume stamp collection, she said. Since she had chosen ophthalmology to specialise in, post her MBBS, they suggested “eye” as a topic of stamp collection. At the association meet held in the Pandeswar post office in the city the same day, various sets of stamps, collected by Mr. Rao, were on display. The sets included one that featured 540 species of butterflies. It had been exhibited at INDIPEX and had also received a State award.
