Movement against graft gains steam in Mysore

Special Correspondent

‘The campaign will go on till corruption is eradicated from public life'

MYSORE: The movement against corruption, initiated by social activist Anna Hazare in New Delhi, gained momentum in the city with the launch of Citizens' Campaign for Good Governance on Sunday.

The campaign was led by R. Balasubramaniam, activist and founder of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, and witnessed a good gathering.

Dr. Balasubramaniam told The Hindu that the campaign will go on till corruption was eradicated from public life. It will not end with the enactment of the Jan Lokpal Bill, he stressed.

“To start with, we will identify the officials known to be corrupt and keep a vigil,” he said.

“The campaign will be launched within a fortnight and volunteers who can dedicate at least two hours a week will be roped in,” he added. He said the campaign would be a Gandhian movement, and aimed to bring about a change in the mindset of the individuals.

On Sunday, nearly 1,000 people marched from Crawford Hall of the University of Mysore to Gandhi Square carrying placards calling for eradication of corruption. Dr. Balasubramaniam said the response indicated that time was ripe to galvanise people into a mass movement. Dr. Balasubramaniam said the citizens were also administered an oath that they would strive to make Mysore district corruption-free.
