The best way to entertain is by winning

Jacques Kallis

Tight, close finishes are more common than big margins of victory in the IPL, so it's easier to stomach a two-run loss than it used to be in the days when such a narrow defeat would keep you awake for days wondering what you could have done differently.

The IPL is the most tightly-packed schedule in the history of the game, so there simply isn't time to dwell on your mistakes and dissect the team's performances. A short debrief, perhaps, but your effort must be focused on the next game which you can affect, not the last one which you cannot.

Every run important

All the players know that every single run in a T20 game could be important. We have said it and heard it a hundred times.

So many games are decided by less than 10 runs. That means if each member of the team can find a way to save just one extra run in the field, or find just one more single with the bat, you'll win nine out of ten games!

It's a good theory, anyway.

But it does not take into account the fact that the same conversation is taking place in nine other IPL squads and players are making the same commitment to finding an extra run!

There is no question that many of the squads will take a few weeks to settle down and get to know each other.

It's the same in any team sport although some people might think it would be easier to play cricket with unfamiliar teammates than football or rugby, for example, but that's not the case in my experience.

There are practical things like running between the wickets which depend on players knowing each other to be really successful, but there are many other aspects of the game which are equally important but not so easy to define.

If you know your teammates and trust them then it can raise your performance level.

But apart from that, good camaraderie means you can have fun together and enjoy the cricket — and a happy team is a successful one more often than not.

We certainly have the right man at KKR to ensure that the players are in the right environment to form a strong bond.

Fabulous boss

Shahrukh Khan is a fabulous boss to have because he believes that having fun and entertaining your audience is an important part of playing cricket.

Personally, I think the best way to entertain your supporters is by winning and that is where I will be concentrating all of my efforts for the next month and a half. I came close with the Royal Challengers and now I have another chance at winning the IPL with the Knight Riders. It is a title I would love to have on my career record.

And when I look at the quality of players in the squad, I cannot believe that they will under-achieve again this season.
