Candlelight protest against nuke plants held
Special Correspondent
Volunteers of Greenpeace participate in demonstration
HYDERABAD: Greenpeace, an NGO fighting for conservation of the environment, organised a candlelight demonstration on Necklace Road here on Monday evening to mark the completion of one month since an earthquake hit Japan and the nation subsequently facing a nuclear disaster at Fukushima.
Young volunteers of Greenpeace participated in the demonstration wearing headbands and arranged candlelight vigils on the ground to inscribe words ‘no to Fukushima, Jaitapur and Kovvada'.
Territory manager of Greenpeace Pankaj Kumar said the programme was taken up by the NGO in ten cities across the country today to convey the message that nuclear power was not the solution to power needs and only renewable sources was the way forward.
Renewable energy
A volunteer, Praveen Paul, asked why India should propose nuke plants at Jaitapur in Maharashtra and Kovvada in Srikakulam district when developed countries were going in for renewable energy sources.
