Permission to cut trees opposed

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: The Conservation of Nature Society has condemned the decision of the Chief Conservator of Forests (Social Forestry) here to allow the cutting of nearly 300 trees on the stretch from Meenchanda to Arayidathupalam for widening the road.

Leaders of the organisation said in a statement here on Saturday that the conservator had endorsed the decision to cut the trees through an order on February 8. Information obtained through the Right to Information Act had revealed that the order was issued following the decision of a meeting chaired by Mayor A.K. Premajam on November 10, 2010. Vinod Kumar Damodar, joint secretary of the society, said the association would approach the court to get the order revoked, as the officials had issued it without even visiting the location or even understanding the importance of the year 2011 which the United Nations had declared the International Year of Forests. The duty of the Social Forestry Department was to protect the trees, but through this order, it had stepped back from its professed mission.
