THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Expressing confidence that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will be voted back to power, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said that what he can see across the State is a massive upsurge in the LDF's favour. In a statement here on Monday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the popular support for the LDF was the result of the work done by the LDF government during the last five years. Even in Malappuram, which had ceased to be a Muslim League stronghold in the last Assembly elections but where the Muslim League was reportedly on a comeback trail, he could sense a clear pro-Left sentiment among the people. The rallies in Malappuram had proved that a people were coming together against all forms of decadence, he said. Mr. Achuthanandan alleged that the Congress' attempt during the campaign was to undermine the principle of electoral democracy by pumping in money and imposing candidates from above. The party had displayed its money power by pressing helicopters into service for its campaigners and giving money liberally to its candidates. The LDF, on the contrary, had forged on the campaign front with the support of all sections of the people. The ruling front had all along upheld the value of secularism and all attempts of the United Democratic Front to mobilise people against it had failed because they saw in the LDF an ideal refuge.
