Woman used as bait for killing Sohail, say police

Marri Ramu

Syed Hyder, brother of Syed Jaffar who was killed by Sohail, lays the trap

Jaffar asks Abed's wife to befriend Sohail after all his attempts to lure him fail

HYDERABAD: When Syed Sohail received a missed call on his mobile phone a month ago, little did he realise that it was bait being thrown by his rival gang to eliminate him.

He casually called back that number. A woman received the call apologising that she had called his number by mistake. Out of curiosity, 28-year-old Sohail asked her details, their conversation continued for some time and soon they became friends.

On Friday last, he rushed to the government hospital after the woman invited him to meet her there only to be hacked to death by his opponents.

“Apparently, Sohail never knew his rival Syed Hyder was laying a trap by making the woman call him up,” the investigators said. Sohail's was a vengeance killing and consequence of a gang war.

Land dispute

Gangs led by Murtuza and Syed Jaffar had been fighting for supremacy over land and monetary disputes in Rajendranagar for the past five years. In February 2010, Jaffar and his associates allegedly murdered Syed Haji of Murtuza group. The second gang led by Sohail retaliated by eliminating Jaffar five months later. Jaffar's s elder brother Hyder wanted to avenge this. Initially, he tried to plant his men in Sohail's gang. Then he attempted to lure Sohail to isolated places by offering liquor parties through his accomplices.

“On learning that Sohail plays the game of cards, he tried to invite him to play cards. As all these plans failed, he finally decided to use the woman to lure Sohail,” the police said.

The woman was wife of one Abed, whom Jaffar had met in prison. Abed became a loyalist of Jaffar Hussain as the latter had helped him secure bail by arranging money. He readily agreed to help when Hyder Hussain approached him .

Hyder bought a SIM card a month ago and asked Abed's wife to somehow befriend Sohail. “He paid nearly Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 now and then to her,” the investigators said stating she used to speak with Sohail from her house in Vattepally of Old City. In the beginning, Sohail was cautious of his movements.

When she invited him to King Koti area, he replied that he would feel secure in and around Asifnagar and would be taking risk going to other places. Hyder's first plan was to murder Sohail at Abids. It failed as Sohail came to Ramakrishna theatre through the second gate on being invited by the woman, while Hyder's gang lay in wait at the main gate on MJ Market-Abid road.
