TOUGH CHALLENGE: Ministers D.L. Ravindra Reddy and Mohd. Ahmedullah

HYDERABAD: Taking serious note of deployment of Ministers as election in-charges by the Congress, the Election Commission has deputed as many as six observers to keep a watch on the goings-on in the Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly constituencies and take action against attempts to unduly influence voters.

Among them is a senior IPS officer from Bihar, Kamal Kishore Singh, whom the EC has specially appointed as “police observer” for both constituencies, keeping in view the dubious track record of some political leaders in Kadapa district. This is the first time that a police observer is being posted for any election in the State.

While the two constituencies have a common expenditure observer Asutosh Rajhans, Kadapa will have three general observers D. Senthil Pandiyan, Puneetha K. Goel, and Rajiv Kumar Mittal and Pulivendula one, R.K. Gaikwad.

The six observers, who are yet to arrive in the State, will stay in the constituencies till the completion of polling on May 8.

Treating these by-elections on a different footing, the EC has made yet another special arrangement by constituting Media Advertisement Certification & Monitoring Committee at the local level to clear film/TV ads of political parties and candidates. The State's Chief Electoral Officer has been designated the appellate authority if the candidate or party is aggrieved over a decision of the committee.

Sources in the state election cell said a strict vigil was being maintained by EC's shadow teams on the 11 Ministers and the likely candidates, including D.L. Ravindra Reddy and Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, Health and Agriculture Ministers respectively. These teams are formed with an officer and a video unit to follow them and videograph their actions.

Meanwhile, the possibility of action by the EC regarding use of YSR's picture in the YSR Congress Party flag has been ruled out for the time being, as it has not received any written complaint from the Congress, whose leaders lodged only an oral complaint with the CEO.
