VIJAYAWADA: Paralympian Thirumalai Kumar, a senior booking clerk at Vijayawada railway station, bagged one gold and one bronze medal in the 1st Sharjah international athletic meet for physically challenged held in the first week of April.
He won the medals in shot put and discus throw respectively. He was one among the seven-member Indian contingent that took part in the meet.
Kumar threw 10.83 metres in the shot put while, while he heaved the disc to a distance of 38.07 metres in the F-57 category.
“I am happy that my efforts have earned me a slot in the Indian contingent for the London Paralympics to be held in 2012,” said
Kumar, who shifted from swimming to athletics. Kumar has also won many medals competing in several international swimming competitions.
Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager Anurag, Assistant DRM Jayaraj, Divisional Sports Officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra and Sports Welfare Officer Arjun Rao congratulated Kumar for his achievement.
