Industrial sector wary of power holidays

Small, medium industries cannot afford diesel-based generators: industrialist

Power holidays initially declared for Saturday and Sunday, later shifted to Tuesday and Friday

Major industries have captive power generation units, which will be useful for power back-up

SANGAREDDY: The fear of power cut is looming large over the industrial sector in Medak district with many industrialists planning for available and financially viable alternatives. Though the industrial sector was informed about the power holiday for two days a week, it has not yet come into force and there has no official communication so far.

“For the past three weeks we are facing 48-hours power cut because of a repair work which is being carried out on the transformer at Mamidipally. The repair work was expected to be over by this week,” says P. Duraga Prasad, an industrialist from Pasamylaram.

Stating that the government has promised to supply gas-based power this year for an additional charge Rs. 1 per unit, he said that small and medium industries could not afford to depend on diesel-based generator units to run the works.

At Khajipally area, though the industrial sector was informed about the two-day power cut on Saturday and Sunday, it was shifted to Tuesday and Friday. However, here also, there has been no official communication so far.

While major industries are having captive power generation units, which would be useful for power back-up, the situation being faced by medium and small scale industries is completely different.

“In addition to the weekly power holiday for two days, there will be a regular power cut every day for a few hours stretching up to eight hours. Smaller companies will be forced to go for lay-off or retrenchment,” says K. Raja Rao.

Better than last year

However, they were admitting that the situation was better than last year.

“Last year, there was power cut for three days a week. This year, it is relatively less,'' said Udayabhaskar, GM, Industries.
