Delicate surgery performed

HYDERABAD: Bone cancer surgeons of Kamineni Hospital, L. B. Nagar on Wednesday informed that they performed a complicated surgery known as Rotationplasty and helped 11-year-old-Yashwanth Varma to recover from a malignant tumour around his knee joint. The procedure involves removal of the area of bone affected by the tumour. “Once the tumour is removed, the remaining leg is rotated 180 degrees and reattached to the thigh. The surgery gives an appearance of short leg with the foot turned backwards.

The foot and ankle then function as knee joint, allowing the patient to wear prosthesis,” said Surgical Oncologist, Kamineni Hospital, Kishore B. Reddy.

The advantage of such a procedure, when compared to direct amputation, is that the patient will have a functioning joint at the level of the knee allowing for a smaller and better functioning prosthesis, doctors said. “I am perfectly alright now and able to walk easily with the help prosthesis. There is no pain at all,” Yashwanth Varma told presspersons.

In another surgery, hospital doctors said they removed a tumour, which had grown from left chest wall to the inside the left hand, from a 60-year-old patient-Pulayya Reddy. “Experts had advised for amputation but we managed to remove the tumour without affecting the main arteries,” Dr. Kishore said.
