Paramilitary forces to guard counting centres

“255 police personnel deployed at the four

counting centres

in the city”


CHENNAI: Four counting centres in Chennai where electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in the 16 Assembly constituencies in the district and Sholinganallur will be provided heavy paramilitary security in two days.

Addressing mediapersons on Wednesday evening, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said that a total of 255 police personnel have been deployed at the four counting centres in the city till the paramilitary forces arrive from West Bengal.

Three paramilitary companies out of 17 companies to be deployed at all counting centres across Tamil Nadu would substitute the police personnel.

The EVMs used in the 17 constituencies have been taken to the counting centres - Anna University (EVMs of Virugampakkam, Saidapet, T. Nagar, Mylapore, Velachery constituencies); Queen Mary's College (R.K. Nagar, Royapuram, Harbour, Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituencies); Loyola College (Perambur, Kolathur, Villivakkam, Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar, Egmore, Thousand Lights, Anna Nagar constituencies) and Mohammed Sathak College in Sholinganallur (Sholinganallur).

Strong room

At the counting centres, a strong room would be provided to the EVMs of each of the constituencies. Fourteen policemen, including a Sub Inspector and two head constables, have been deployed for each of the strong rooms.

On Mr. Rajendran said it was “incident free polling” on Wednesday with no complaints from election officials or the public. “There were small incidents of clashes in a few areas, which were sorted out immediately. However, vehicle checking will go on till Wednesday night,” he added.
