HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu has demanded inclusion of handloom weavers in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) and save them from starvation. In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. Naidu asked him to take up the issue with the Centre and bring production of Janata cloth under NREGA. He said a number of programmes meant for weavers had not taken off. The debt waiver scheme promised three years ago had not materialised. Government orders were issued for Rs. 109 crore as part of this scheme as against the promised Rs. 312 crore. APCO was almost defunct with arrears from government departments accounting for Rs. 56 crore. As a result, it was unable to release payments to primary weavers' societies. There had been no elections to APCO from 2008. He underscored the need for extending a rebate of 30 per cent, resolving issues related to sharing of yarn subsidy between society and weavers.
