Raichur: The University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Raichur, will hold its first annual convocation on the university campus here on Saturday. Agriculture Minister and Pro-Chancellor of the university, Umesh V. Katti, will inaugurate it.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, B.V. Patil, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said the UAS, which was established last year, said that S. Ayyappan, Secretary, Agriculture and Education, Government of India, and Director-General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research would also attend. Dr. Patil said that 93 postgraduate students and 35 degree students would be awarded certificates. Dr. Patil said the university was finalising the tender process for the proposed administrative building for the university, for which the State Government had released Rs. 18 crore.

The university, which owns about 680 acres of land, was in need of 200 acres more for improving infrastructure and for research. The university had submitted a report to the Government seeking approval for land acquisition, he said.

On the proposal for transfer of 7,500 acres of farm land from the Central-State Farm at Jawalgera village in Sindhanur taluk of the district, the Vice-Chancellor said the university had requested the Government to take up the matter with the Centre.

The State Government transferred about 175 acres of farm land at Dhadesugur village in Sindhanur taluk to the UAS. The university proposes to develop about 100 acres of this land for seed production and 75 acres for development of inland fisheries.
