Gambhir is game

Special Correspondent

Rajasthan Royals game will be a big challenge, says KKR skipper

Whatmore emphasises the need to be flexible

JAIPUR: Gautam Gambhir wears a frown one moment; and buries it with a smile the next. It all depends on what you ask him.

“You are the highest paid player in this tournament,” the question is half way and Gambhir is smiling. “But you haven't scored much. When will you justify this price tag?” Gambhir turns his eyes away and hisses, “Next question.”

The media interaction has begun on a rousing note. Gambhir is game. What can you learn from Shane Warne's captaincy now that you would be facing him. Gambhir, captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, is still seething with anger.

“What is there to learn? A captain is as good as his team. It is the team that wins and not just the captain. I have my own plans, my own style, my own temperament and I have no desire to learn anything from anyone.”

Are you happy there are no Sri Lankans in your team? The smile returns, “It's been a relief that we won't be losing any player. There are some good Sri Lankan players around but I am happy we don't have any in our team.”

Big challenge

On the upcoming match against Rajasthan Royals, Gambhir said, “It will be a big challenge. We have the potential and the experience and it is a matter of giving your 100 per cent. The result is not in our hands. We have great depth in our batting and being flexible helps,” said Gambhir, who also confessed he had been most relaxed in the last fortnight. “Leading KKR is a great honour.”

KKR coach Dav Whatmore emphasised the need to be flexible.

“It may not work always but it is good to be flexible. We welcome playing the best and we are prepared. We are here to win and play hard.”

Shaun Tait appeared relaxed. “The conditions in India can be challenging. My game is based around speed and I need to watch out for my fitness. T20 is good for cricket.

“It helps a youngster develop skills faster. I also believe bowlers have a massive role to play in T20.

“It can't be just about batting. You need bowlers to start the game, don't you?”
