Badal rejects Centre's wheat bonus

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday dismissed as inadequate the bonus of Rs.50 per quintal on wheat over and above the Minimum Support Price of Rs.1,120 per quintal for the current rabi marketing season announced by the Centre.

In a statement here, Mr. Badal charged that the “non-remunerative MSP” coupled with the Centre's “anti-farmer” policies was primarily responsible for the slowdown in agricultural growth.

Support price

The Centre announced the bonus on Friday over and above the support price of Rs.1,120 per quintal in order to boost procurement.

Mr. Badal said his government had been demanding MSP of at least Rs.1,400 per quintal for wheat.

Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh lashed out at the Chief Minister for “rejecting” the bonus. In a statement here, Capt. Amarinder Singh said if Mr. Badal felt Rs.50 provided by the Centre was too low, and if he was really a well-wisher of farmers as he claims to be, his government should also provide at least this much of bonus to the farmers of the State. - PTI
