Focus on developing aerospace technology

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister V.K. Saraswat on Saturday urged Indian defence establishments to fill the “gaps” in Indian aerospace technologies in order to remain relevant to the twenty-first century.

Delivering the Fifth Air Chief Marshal L.M. Khatre Memorial Lecture, Dr. Saraswat said the development of the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is “now on the drawing board.” “The Light Combat Aircraft specially designed for the Navy will be a reality soon,” he added.

The lecture was organised jointly by the Karnataka Chapter of the Air Force Association, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. and the Karnataka branch of the Aeronautical Society of India.

Dr. Saraswat said although Indian scientific and industrial establishments supporting the Indian Air Force had made “enormous strides” in the last 50 years despite the “denial of access to technology by foreign agencies,” much more remains to be done. More sophisticated electronics, new materials based on composites and specialised alloys, advanced laser technologies that facilitate precision strikes, new GPS systems that enable airborne monitoring are some of the areas in which Indian establishments need to focus on in order to remain relevant, Dr. Saraswat added.

“We need to develop missiles for all types of launchers from sea, air and land,” he remarked.

Referring to the ongoing testing of the indigenous Kaveri aircraft engine, Dr. Saraswat said, “The fact that the engine is undergoing tests in Russia itself shows our gap in technological capability”.
