A participant in the rangoli competition organised in Coimbatore on Friday. COIMBATORE: Transgenders in Coimbatore came together here on Friday to celebrate the ‘Transgenders' Day' announced by the State Government. A host of activities were organised by the Coimbatore District TAI (Tamil Nadu AIDS Initiative) Vizhudhugal Community Based Organisation in association with Native Medicare Charitable Trust (NMCT). Nearly a 150 of them were seen in celebration mode drawing rangoli, taking part in musical chair and dance programmes. Inaugurating the event, Mohammed Ali, programme manager of District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit, said though ‘Thirunangaigal Week' was celebrated every year in January by the transgenders, this was the first time it was being celebrated officially. They have been involved in social activities such as blood and eye donation. “They are all happy about the recognition from the Government because it proves social inclusion in the community,” Mr. Ali said.
