Erode
Youth Congress cadre staged a novel protest in Erode on Saturday against the TNCC chief K.V. Thangkabalu by praying in front of the Mahatma Gandhi portrait. — ERODE: Youth Congress members in Erode district on Saturday staged a novel protest against the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Chief K.V. Thangkabalu for the en masse expulsion of 19 partymen. Mr. Thangkabalu expelled 19 Congress cadres including actor-politician S. Ve. Shekher and a number of Youth Congress members for “anti-party activities” after the April 13 assembly polls. This had triggered wide-spread protests against him in the State. A group of Youth Congress members led by President of the Erode Lok Sabha constituency area Suresh gathered at District Congress committee office here and lit candles in front of the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and offered prayers demanding action against Mr. Thangkabalu. The prayers were also offered by the protestors for “saving the Congress party”. They claimed that Mr. Thangkabalu did not have the right to expel Youth Congress members as that was beyond his jurisdiction. Party sources here said that Mr. Suresh and other Youth Congress office-bearers were expelled from the party as they reportedly raised slogans against the TNCC chief at an election rally addressed by All India Congress Committee General Secretary Rahul Gandhi at Erode. The slogans were raised when Mr. Thangkabalu rose to address the rally.
