‘Writers can strengthen linguistic harmony'

Staff Correspondent

Institute a special award for women poets,

says Jagajampi

‘Set up a study centre to conduct research on region's history'

Kittur (Belgaum District): Writer and poet B.A. Sanadi has urged writers to strengthen linguistic harmony and socio-cultural values in society.

He was speaking at the valedictory of the two-day, district-level seventh sammelan of the Belgaum District Kannada Sahitya Parishat (BDKSP) here on Saturday.

Drawing attention to the multilingual society of Belgaum district, where Marathi-speaking people could be seen reading Kannada books, he said writers and poets could play a significant role in furthering the cause of linguistic harmony, especially in boundary districts such as Belgaum. Mr. Sanadi, president of the sammelan, observed that the event had witnessed debates on topical subjects such as agriculture, environment, water, women's and children's issues, and media. He wished to see more such activities in the future.

BDKSP president Basavaraj Jagajampi said the sammelan stressed on getting a taluk tag for Kittur, the erstwhile princely state of Rani Chennamma.

He urged the Government to institute a special award for women poets, presented during the annual Kittur Utsav. He also called for the setting up of a study centre at the Rani Chennamma University to carry out research on the region's history.

Mr. Jagajampi said the Government should prioritise development work proposed under the Kittur Development Authority. Major localities and roads in Kittur town should be named after famous Kannada writers and poets. Besides, the Government should support organic farming in the State, he said. Earlier, writer Ramakrishna Marathe read out the seven resolutions adopted at the end of the sammelan.

Kittur Town Panchayat member Lalita Savadi, Madiwal Rajyogindra Swami of Sri Rajguru Samsthan Kalmath, Siddhaling Swami of Nichchanki Gurumadiwaleshwar Math, member of KLES Board of Directors V.I. Patil and film producer Shivaranjan Bolannavar were present.
